G-UFOX - Oil Pressure Sensor (Stuff We Have Learnt)

The new 912 engines come with a new oil pressure transducer part: 456180. This is a 4 to 20 mA current transmitter device - that means it will conduct 4mA at zero pressure and 20mA at 10.75 bar. It is therefore a more complicated device, but immune to changes in voltage and resistance between sensor and meter (up to a point).

It requires two connections - one is 12V from the ignition switch (via instruments breaker) and the other is the 4-20mA signal to the gauge (although technically it also has a ground connection where it is screwed into the engine).

The kit comes with the mating half connector part number: 881302. I had a bit of a problem with this at first - partly as there was no information on the orientation of the contacts. My second go of making it I used slightly thicker wire which made a much more clean crimp and it latched into the housing better. Use 20AWG minimum, but 18AWG seems to fit better.

Pin A - not used

Pin B - supply for sensor - connect to instruments breaker - I connected this directly to the supply for the gauge.

Pin C - output signal - connect to gauge signal input terminal.

Although the data specifies the pins A, B & C, the connector is actually marked 1, 2 & 3 respectively.

Alternatively, you could buy the pre-wired connector part number: 864250, but this was relatively expensive and on a long lead time (at time of writing).

See page 39 of the Rotax Service Instruction SI-912-020 R7 for more information (note - this may be out of date by the time you read this).
